Pro Physio Scoliosis Protocol

Here at Pro Physio we have developed a very detailed protocol in order to treat various levels of scoliosis. Our protocol has been shown to successfully decrease symptoms of scoliosis and even in some cases actually reverse the degree of curvature to the spine.


What to Expect on the First Visit:
First, each patient will begin with a thorough exam including x-rays, posture analysis, and orthopedic tests. From this exam the Physical Therapist / Doctor of Chiropractic will develop a program specifically designed for the patient’s needs.




The Protocol



Step One:

Each visit the patient will begin with Spinal Decompression Therapy using the DRX9000. Spinal Decompression Therapy is a very advanced form of traction in which the patient is harnessed up and slowly lowered down into a supine position. The spine is stretched using a calculated gentle pull from the harness, relieving pressure on the nerves. Over time the therapy actually retrains the muscles and ligaments surrounding the vertebrae to keep the pressure off the nerves and straighten the spine. The therapy is completely noninvasive; most patients fall asleep or watch a DVD! Following the decompression the patient gets electrical muscle stimulation to relax the muscles.
What’s the difference between regular traction and spinal decompression therapy? Spinal decompression therapy uses a calculated, logarithmic pattern during pulls. It will pull at a certain force, then release to half that force. By using this pattern, the muscles and ligaments will actually be “tricked” into relaxing, thus giving us a deeper stretch. With traction, there is only one force pulling constantly, causing the muscles to “guard” against the pull.




Step Two:

Next, the patient is taken through stretches and exercises to improve flexibility, strength, and tone, and to reduce inflammation.The physical therapist can offer massage and fascial manipulation as part of scoliosis physical therapy sessions. Home exercises are also designed to help the body retain the benefits of the physical therapy.




Step Three:

The physical therapist will develop a core program for the patient that will help to strengthen the back and improve posture. The program usually consists of short bursts of exercises such as planks and abdominal work in thirty second intervals followed by one minute rest periods.
